"These battles were one of the most pointless of all time as many were lost for such a small reason" - Unknown
Would it have been better if the Americans hadn't fought at all?
The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa was a terrible battle for both the American armies and the Japanese. Even though America had taken both islands it came at a massive cost for the States. There were massive casualties on both sides of the line and some argue that it wasn't worth it. Even today the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa remain being one of the biggest symbols for American pride today. It is often compared with other great American accomplishments. The picture of the Americans pushing back the American flag is one of the most famous war photos of all tme.
