- Reasons why U.S sought detente:
- Nuclear and Strategic Parity the Russians had caught the U.S in most military areas (caused of them to think of other options)
- Early success:
Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty (limit the spread of Nuclear weapons) Signed by Johnson in 1968 (France and China do not sign it)
Many, Like Henry Kissinger, felt detente was just a new form of containment
Ostpolitik
- German for east politics
- Western German leader, Willy Brandt wished to unite the Germanys
- Wanted to improve relations between the two
Helsinki Accords 1975
- U.S and USSR and 31 other countries came together in 1975 in Finland
- Agreed to:
Accept European frontiers
SALT
- Talks began in 1969 between us and USSR
- 1972 the first salt treaty agreed that both countries would limit their number of ICBMS
- Salt II 1979 intended to accomplish nuclear parity
- It got interrupted by soviet invasion of Afghanistan
- 1980 Reagan became president and ended detente

BIG Question: Did Nixon come up with the right idea's?
Summary: Richard Nixon was elected as the 37th president of the United States. He promised that he would end the Vietnam war. He pulled troops out but countinued to bomb under the plan of Vietnamization. Came of with the lesson the cold war tension. During the time of the Dente many treaties were completed like Ostpolitik, Helsinki Accords 1975 and SALT.
